Last week, we talked about the delicious street food culture of Christchurch. This week, we wanted to give you a few more reasons to come and visit the beautiful Garden City. As you probably already know, at the Old Countryhouse, we just love our city. There are so many amazing things that make our Christchurch unique and we love going around the town center and make new discoveries. So here are our top 5 favorite things:
- Christchurch has its own wizard
Yes, you heard it right. Christchurch has its official wizard. He wears black robes and a pointy hat. On a nice sunny day, you can see him drinking coffee in a New Regent street café or preaching in Cathedral Square. He recently got himself an apprentice, as well. Feel free to go and have a chat with them as well: they are both super-friendly and open to meeting new people!
- Street Art everywhere!
After the 2011 Earthquake, Christchurch saw its streets getting filled with art. From the walls around the museum to the small suburban shops, you can now see some amazing work of art all around the city. It is so good to just go around the city to try and discover some new projects!
- The city center street cones
Well, they aren’t really cones… They’re more sheep-shaped. You can see them around the pedestrian streets of the city centre. Don’t they look gorgeous?
- Canterbury’s delicious wines
The Canterbury region has some truly amazing and well-known vineyards such as Waipara Springs, Greystone, Valley Road and Melton Estate. Christchurch is a great place to start a winery tour and some of them can even be organized here at the hostel’s travel desk. You will find many varieties of wine such as Pinot Gris and Noir, Sauvignon and Riesling and a multitude of different establishments, with restaurants and cafés on-site. Some vineyards even offer visits of the plantation and the cellars.
- The Gap Filler Projects
The Gap Filler Project started after the 2011 Earthquake to bring some positive vibes to the city by filling up gaps around town with creative and fun projects. They are always working on new things to offer the people and never seem to run out of ideas! Our favorite ones are the ping-pong table near the Bridge of Remembrance, the Book-Exchange Fridge, the Dance-O-Mat and the Super Street Arcade. For more info on their on-going projects, you can check out their website or just come to our reception at the Old Countryhouse!
We want your opinion! Have you seen anything fun or different in Christchurch that you had never seen anywhere else? We would love to hear about your experience!
